Usually Thanksgiving may be fairly low key, but not stress free. This year, for many different reasons we (my parents and I) needed a stress free day. The options were to go to my brother's in-laws (who always invite us as an afterthought) or try to do it ourselves. My mother didn't have the energy to try to organize dinner so was going for the default (to go to my brother's in-laws - who are very nice people, but a lot more "party party" than we are.). I talked them out of it. I told my folks that I was taking the day off on Wednesday and I'd do all the prep work.

I had four things on my list: Make the stuffing for the chicken we'd roast, make the cranberry sauce, make the banana bread, and make the squash. I arrive at my folks house on Wednesday at about 10:30am. My mother is at the artist's co-op she is a part of working for the day in the shop (one of the reasons she didn't want to organize thanksgiving) and my dad was about to go pick up stuff (the two pies, and swordfish steaks for dinner on Wednesday, lunch meats from the Italian shop, cheese from the cheese shop, etc.) I find my mom made the cranberry sauce already, so my list was down to three.

The upshot is, Thanksgiving day we sat around and watched movies all afternoon, broke for a bit to stuff the chicken and put it in the oven, but there was no hurry, no stress, no need to *do* anything other than talk and laugh, watch movies and snippets of football. The biggest stress of the day was making sure the dog got outside every once in a while (she's a fourteen year old Lab - which is ancient for her size dog).

Friday was another "come for lunch, stay for dinner" kind of day, and today is my birthday (my thirty-mmrphth) - pancakes and chocolate-raspberry mousse cake for breakfast. I played with my nieces for much of the morning (my mother has found all of my brother's and my old toys - they love my Playskool castle- and all the Playmobile people and horses (I had the first western set, the first knight set, and the very first pirate ship)). G drew me a picture - it was of her and me in front of an orange house. We both have blue eyes in the picture, and our hair is rather blondy-brown - and we are holding hands (or are attached to each other at the hand, I'm not sure which). But she has started to add balloon-like feet to her people, and at almost-five she is showing growth in how she sees things. But then, her Papa (my brother) is a fantastic artist- and her Mommy is very artistic, too - although photography, graphic arts and design are more her strengths (she also knits, which is a talent I am always jealous of).

Happy Birthday to my birthday twin, [livejournal.com profile] hazelhawthorne who I met this year in Las Vegas! Hope your day was as fun as mine!

Now, to relax for the rest of the evening!
