I hate conferences where the conference hotel is not the meeting venue. I have a (long) three city-block walk to and from the venue every day. I can do it either on the sidewalks (above ground) or through the underground walk-way mall thingie. This morning I walked above ground through the "breaking down from the Jazz festival" people and passed an asian man doing his morning routine (something that looked like Tai Chi, but could have been from any number of disciplines, a meditated movement exercise) in a pretty, shaded, courtyard like spot. Across the street were guys in hardhats breaking down scaffolding. A block further on were w stream of people exiting the metro, walking down a ramp and across an alley and streaming into another building. I passed old men sitting on stone walls and sunny spots on benches reading the morning paper and drinking coffee or tea. Hot, breakfast beverages at any rate.

Morning routines. I don't mind seeing what people get up to at 6:15 in the morning, but when facing a work day that won't end until after 8:30pm making us take a ten minute walk just to *get* there seems unfair. Especially since I run around like a crazy person answering inane questions all day. And the venue is *huge* it takes up a couple of city blocks all on it's own. Blessing: we're all on one level. Curse: the rooms are *acres* apart.

I haven't had the time to watch *TV* let alone the Firefly episodes I have yet to watch (I brought the DVDs with me). I get back to the hotel (which needs two separate elevator rides to get to my room) and wash up and fall into bed. Hopefully the week will slow, and since I am not going on the social event dinner cruise (the earliest you can get off the boat is 11pm and when I need to be *at* *work* at 6:30, that is a no go. Then, maybe I can submerge myself in a couple of episodes a night (I think I've seen the first six...) and just *relax* for a while. These dinners when you don't sit down to the table until 9pm, and Montreal is just so european and civilized that dining is a time-gobbling phenomena. 11pm is the *earliest* you can expect to escape.

Wow, this sounds really rather rant-like and that wasn't my intention at all.

Maybe I should get some more sleep tonight so I am not so grumpy tomorrow. Comforting thought: Mondays always suck. But there are six more days that have to be better!
