I can not escape the Wizard of Oz.
As most of you know I am producing a community production of the Wizard of Oz... And designing the set, but that is another story. I never really realized how much the Wizard of Oz has permeated the American culture. From jazzy version of Over the Rainbow (or almost hard-rock versions of the same tune) to everyday references like some commercial for automobiles using over the rainbow for a theme (a couple of weeks ago I caught the last fourteen minutes of Scrubs where the entire episode was steeped in Wizard of Oz references to the point the yellow line on the hospital floor turned into the yellow brick road. WERS (local college radio) every saturday and sunday does a broadway show followed by an a cappella show, followed by a kid's music show from 10am-8pm (12pm-8pm on Sunday). Every weekend I am just in time to hear either Over the Rainbow, a men's a capella group do a six minute version of the Wizard of Oz, or, again, over the rainbow. And I swear I've seen more programs that in someway reference landing in Oz, or munchkins, flying monkeys, emerald city.
I just can't escape.
