In the over twenty years since I was in school lacrosse has gained huge popularity where I grew up. It has eclipsed field hockey and soccer. Both my nieces play, but B is slightly too young to play actual games yet, and G's games are tailored to her age group and play only twenty minutes a half - so the whole game takes less than an hour - about fifty minutes with halftime being just under ten minutes long (getting twenty ten-year olds out on the field takes a couple minutes). It gets longer as they get older until they play a regulation half - which according to wikipedia is thirty minutes. - so the whole game is sixty minutes of constant motion.
G had a game yesterday that I went to. We were fifteen minutes into the first half when B pipes uo she has to go to the bathroom. She and my S-I-L went off to find one after making sure L (who is four next month) didn't have to go, too. He said no, so off they went leaving my mom and I and my brother with L. They were gone a good long time trying to find a door in one of the schools open - the high school and middle school are co-located on the same huge campus - with playing fields on every side. And there were no less than four lacrosse games and a baseball game going on in sight of where we were sitting - possibly more games on other fields I couldn't see (there are twelve fields on the property total (not including the baseball and softball fields- which, there are four of those) - and most of them I couldn't see from where we were - really huge campus - and since I went to both the middle school and the high school I am familiar with how it is put together). There was game after game after game - teams whose games were done leaving, new teams taking their place. It was a very busy place. All the teams seemed to be made up of girls - although some boys were tossing around lacrosse balls with their own sticks, they weren't suited up to play - they were just having fun.
Plus a local ice cream truck was there when we got there, went away for an hour and came back when we were leaving. Although, thankfully had the ice cream truck jingle thing turned off (hot sunny day, a few people let their kids (non-players) have ice cream).
B came back as the second half began and announced she used a port-a-potty. They had hand sanitizer! B and her mom had been back for about three minutes when L spoke up he had to go to the bathroom. Now he had been asked twice if he had to go - once when we were all at a coffee shop that had a bathroom, and once when B had to go "urgently." My brother looked at my S-I-L with this funny look on his face, but dutifully stood up to take L off to the port-a-pot. Apparently, the port-a-pot was not good enough for L, because when he got back he announced he'd peed against a tree!
L is potty trained, but doesn't like "going" anywhere but home. He's wet his pants a couple of times because for some reason my parent's downstairs bathroom intimidates him. I've suggested my mom introduce him to the upstairs hall bath where the toilet is lower and the paper isn't up out of reach of the dog - because the dog does not climb stairs they can leave the paper in the holder instead of setting it up high on the windowsill. He might "go" in a place that is slightly more helpful for someone his size. I think my mom might do that. Since L loves to climb the stairs at my parent's house that might cut down on his accidents there.
Ah kids! But Mother's day was lovely and I got to see the munchkins. And also see my brother and his oldest daughter get into a water fight.
