My nieces are being brought up to send thank you notes. They are young enough that my SIL, K is writing most of B's (she's five) and she is adding her name. G, however, at seven, is writing her own. Her handwriting is small and cramped, and reminds me of my brother's. This kid is HIS kid - athletic, artistic, and quiet. K says G is her most aggressive, and at the same time her most empathic child. It is very true that she is both of those, never says five words when two will do, and constantly checks on everyone in her vicinity - and it is not a learned behavior of being the oldest, either - she was like this at eighteen months and two years before she became a sister. B, on the other hand, NEVER shuts up. L, at not-quite-a-year, is still in the drooling/crawling/scooting stage (almost figured out what to do with those legs of his, but not quite yet), and doesn't do much more than baby-babble, and cry.

Back to the thank you notes - the girls did the PMC Kids challenge. PMC stands for Pan-Mass Challenge. It is bike riding to raise money for cancer research via the Jimmy Fund and the Dana Farber Institute. Adults have the choice of rides around Eastern Massachusetts - of differing lengths one and two day rides. Kids have smaller challenges, riding around the campus of a local college, or riding around cones in a parking lot depending on the age and riding ability of the kid. G, at seven years old, has already taken a bike ride of six miles in length. She did the longer kid's challenge. B, not as good on a bike rode in the parking lot challenge. I sponsored them both, and they sent me lovely thank you notes.

G heard about PMC kids challenge in school, and the aspect of kids helping kids was hugely attractive to her. She, of course, got B involved, because as little sisters everywhere know, anything Big Sis does Little Sis wants to do, too.
