So I've been delving into the past, sorting out various boxes of stuff that I haven't touched since I moved out of my parent's house. I've also had more contact with high school friends in the last few weeks than in the last fifteen years. Weird. (Hi Chrissy, if you are reading this! I've missed you so much!)

So anyway, I've sorted out a box or two that held middle school and high school writing assignments, and can I say that I was one weird little kid? I drew unceasingly, and doodled on *everything.* My handwriting was appalling, but I was creative. I'm still creative, but in vastly different ways now.

So anyway, enough about the past (even if I did pare it down from three boxes of crap to one). Last week Gwen and I went to a fandom meet-up in Boston, which was lovely, with lovely lovely people in attendance. However, it drove home how strange it is to be sitting *in person* with someone have have them say "L-O-L." Or "W-T-F." So what is up with that?

"O-M-G" does actually stand for something, and saying it out "oh-em-gee" is clunkier than just coming right out and saying "oh my god" because your audience has to then translate what you are saying into the spoken word. So, please, when talking *IN PERSON* do not "el-oh-el" or "double-u-tee-eff" at me. Please just ask me "what the fuck?!?"

I'm just sayin'

Didn't we have this conversation at the site visit? I think we did, one late, drunken (on my part) night.

I actually say 'LOL' quite frequently in RL, but as a single syllable. Same with WTF, only I would say 'wuh-tuh-fuh.' Then again, most of my RL friends are from fandom, so I know we're weird.

Why, I believe we did! LOL But I find it more and more prevalent the more time I spend with people I met online.

Why is it that when we see each other in person we revert to netspeak?

Odd, very very odd.

:D

K and her friends say "LOL" in one syllable all of the time. I just roll my eyes at them. I figure it's a fair trade considering how much they do that to me.

"I'm just sayin'"

Amen, sister! The girls started this, I stopped it. Full words with the mama please. I have a hard enough time following what they're saying without all the puter speak. The adults who do this get a WTF look from me, and eventually realize that I'm not gonna respond unless they say the words. It's actually quite comical.

I have a box I labeled 'memories'. It's just stuff from childhood and teenage years for the most part. Some college things too. reading about your trip down memory lane reminded me I should probably clean out my own box one of these days.

You know, I don't think I've ever used 'chat speak' or 'texting' shorthand in conversation. Can't honestly say I've meet anyone who does either. But then, I don't do fan conventions things and my nieces and nephews, while very computer savvy, know better than to speak gibberish. Their mothers and fathers (my siblings) are like me---look shocked here please---if you want them to respond you must speak in a language they understand. :-)
