FIC OR TREAT!!! :D

[identity profile] etakyma.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. I've done something a little strange here, but a few weeks ago, I wrote another Supernatural Halloween fic that kind of mentions the activities here in passing. So I had this plot bunny and decided that fic or treat was the perfect time to sort of explore this. And a wacko crossover time was had by all (and yes, the timing works out pretty well with the movie).

This is an experiment.

A story told in drabblish sections.

The beginning of the tale

Section I.

Dad moved them to Maine four weeks into the new school year. Dean didn't care because high schools were pretty standard in the way they always sucked. But Sammy had been sullen for the whole drive, not speaking a word to their father as he sulked in the back seat.

Being pulled out of one school and shoved unceremoniously into another at the beginning of seventh grade really made him mad in that belligerent teenager kind of way.

John didn't seem to care, at least that's what Sam thought. And Dean just told him to suck it up as he cleaned the guns. Dad was on a hunt. And there seemed to be a lot to hunt in the north east woods, as he moved their home base.

Friendship, Maine was small and rural. The trees were edged in the beginnings of oranges and yellows and brilliant reds as Sam trudged to school from their rented two-bedroom cabin. All the other kids in his class had known each other all their lives.

Being the new kid sucked.

FIC OR TREAT!

Section II.

A couple of weeks after Sam's Dad had moved them to Friendship, Maine another new kid showed up in his classroom. Her name was Kat, and she was viewed as even weirder than Sam. Not only did she not fit in, but she lived in the creepiest house in town.

Her father was some kind of parapsychologist. Sam's dad had snorted at that. You don't try to talk to ghosts, he told his sons, you use salt and fire to get rid of them.

Until Kat, no one but his teachers talked to Sam, but then, he kept pretty much to himself - hiding behind his shaggy hair. During science class, Kat was paired with Sam since everyone else was in well-established groupings. Her hair was dark and straight, which only served to emphasize her huge dark eyes, and she didn't talk much.

This suited Sammy, as he had more meaningful conversations with his text book.

No, not fic or treat, actually...unless you want to.

If you get to my house before I do, gimme a call.

Your cold pie is on the stove. ;<3

Section III.

When the most popular girl in class "suggested" the house Kat and her father were staying in for the seventh grade Halloween party, Sam groaned. Halloween was not a good time of the year for him. Inevitably, there was a haunting, or creature-thing that needed to be taken out.

It didn't help that Sam's father usually spent the weeks surrounding the anniversary of his wife's death either angry or drunk - or both. And since he had just enough self control to realize neither state was good to be in around his boys, John took off, leaving them alone. When they were younger he'd leave them with somebody, but since the year Dean turned fourteen and looked old enough to be responsible for his younger brother they stayed on their own.

Two weeks before Halloween, Dad had told them he was going on a hunt. The boys knew not to expect him home until after November 10th at the earliest and he'd sobered up enough to return to them.

Dad left the impala - since he was now sixteen it was Dean's car - and took the old truck he had been fixing up.

While going through Sam's backpack, Dean had found the eight and a half by eleven sheet of paper advertising the party.

Much to Sam's annoyance he insisted that Sam go.

Section IV.

Dean dropped him off at the head of the driveway, and Sam left the car reluctantly.
He was wearing one of Dad's old army surplus jackets. He figured "army commando" was the closest he could get to an actual Halloween costume. He wore his own khaki trousers and buckled on one of Dad's empty gun holsters to complete the costume.

He didn't count the four knives he had strapped to his body under his clothes.
Halloween was always weird, and he wasn't taking any chances. Especially with the run-down monstrosity that loomed ahead of him.

"Yo, Sammy! I'll be back at ten to pick you up." Dean called from behind him. Dean had a date with Sarah Beth Johnson, and he was relieved they'd have the cabin to themselves. At least until ten.

Slowly, head down, Sam joined his classmates walking through the gates.

Section V.

Sam left the party just before ten because Dean had promised him he'd be back.

The entire evening had been a nightmare of pop music, strobe lights and too many people. Sam didn't like crowds, and while the inside of the house was creepy it didn't really affect him as it did the other kids. Sam had seen creepy, and this moldering old ruin of a house wasn't all that scary.

He was halfway down the driveway when screaming came from inside the house and kids came pouring out of it. It was the most interesting thing that happened all evening.

Sam pulled one of his knives from its sheath and started back toward the house.

Section VI.

Using all the stealth training his father tried to drill into him, Sam crept back to the manor house. The main hall was all lit up as Sam peered through the windows. In the center of the hall Kat danced crazily with her dad. And while he watched, a strange translucent form joined them to twirl wildly.

Noticing that neither Kat nor her father seemed to mind the floating bulbous white shape, Sam decided that it wasn't his problem. He had enough troubles with his brother, dad, and all of seventh grade. He wasn't about to worry about a haunted house where it seemed the haunting wasn't hurting anybody.

Maybe he'd tell Dean that Whipstaff Manor was haunted.

Maybe not.

The end

(Thanks for fic or treating! And for those who may not get the crossover – Kat, her father and the town of Friendship, Maine (including Whipstaff Manor) are from the 1995 movie “Casper”)

I guessed it as soon as my head let me connect 'Friendship, Maine' and 'Kat'!

Poor Sam's getting hell in crossover fic lately - I just wrote one where he keeps noticing this big blue box in different places in history...

That was awesomely cool - great idea! :D
