On other news that no one but me will possibly be interested in (and Gwen, but then she already knows all this), my home community theatre group is off to National Competition in June. We were first runner up in the eastern mass festival competition last year, and won Region One in March. So a few of the group are off to North Carolina to go to compete in Nationals against eleven other groups. Nine regions represent US and the tenth region is "US Armed Forces Overseas" - which I find very interesting. To see our competition go here: http://www.aactfest07.org/regionalwinners.htm.
What is so cool about being a part of Nationals is that no matter where you finish in regards to competition (basically, whether you win the big prize (best production) or not) your group will be invited to an international festival *somewhere.* Now the group that takes home best production gets invited to perform at the international festival in Monaco.
So this is really exciting. And having now seen our entry twice, I can say there is very little about it I didn't like. I hope they have a fabulous time at Nationals, and I hope our lighting designer (who spent an enormous amount of time designing a gobo of the gates of graceland) gets an award.
My only thought is the judges think it is too simple - as the set is a tent, a chair, and the cyc. But the acting is top notch, and the Elvis paraphanalia is unbelievable (decanter in the shape of Elvis - the top is his head - she pops his head off to pour herself a drink). Break a leg, ladies!
